Saathu - Oven Roasted Black whole Chickpeas - Super Food

I am always on a lookout for some simple healthy foods which will give energy and keep us filled for longer.    I heard about Saathu and there were multiple definitions of this recipe.   My mom used to often refer Saathu filled rotis that she used to have while growing up in Bihar.  

Here is how my mom described me about this superfood sold as street food in Bihar:    

        Street side vendor will have this flour heaped on a big basket.  They will have raw onions, green chilles and other sides.    Typically they put this flour in a leaf bowl add some salt, pepper, raw onions, lemon juice and green chillies- thats it, their super food is ready and keeps them going.  It's also consumed as a drink with buttermilk and salt on a hot day.  

What is Saathu?

Its  oven roasted kala chana (Bengal Gram) generally prepared in a speciality store in India.  

Alternate that is commonly available in Indian stores is

  •     Roasted whole bengal gram with/without outer skin (preferably unsalted)
  •     Roasted Split Bengal Gram (Pottukadalai in Tamizh). 

How to use?

Make a fine powder of this roasted Bengal Gram in any grinder you have.  Enjoy it in one of the variations as below.
